Description:
Sandia: C. lanatus originated in Africa but widely distributed in Asian history. It is an annual climbing, dicotyledonous, herbaceous, rough, hairy creeping stem provided with tendrils and leaves with five lobes deep yellow flowers, large, unisexual, the female have the gynoecium of three carpels, the male with five stamens.
The fruit is large, pepo, meaty and juicy (more than 90% of watermelon is water), with numerous seeds, almost spherical, green, pink or flesh red - also by the antioxidant lycopene found in tomatoes, generally sweet taste (more rarely yellow and bitter) very refreshing and appreciated for being rich in water and salts; important for slimming diets to contain fewer calories.
